Agriculture to date is still the most dangerous industry with 23.4 deaths per 100,000 workers annually. With Fall being one of the busiest seasons for most agriculture farms and ranches across the United States, the third week of September has been recognized as National Farm Safety and Health Week. It encourages producers to slow down, take care of themselves, and gives us a chance to acknowledge the dedicated individuals that provide us with the essentials we need. The week is initiated by the National Safety Council and has been declared by each sitting U.S. President since Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944.
Grain harvest is wrapping up in Montana, but producers are staying busy with the harvest of specialty crops, planting and working cattle. With the dry conditions across the state, movement of cattle and sheep from summer pasture is picking up and before too long ranchers will be shipping. By making safety a priority on your farm or ranch, you can ensure a successful autumn. Remember, safety is no accident.
