Gil Gasper who serves as chair of the Montana Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee was named winner of the YF&R Discussion Meet during the Montana Farm Bureau Awards Banquet Nov. 15. Gasper won a 2016 570 Polaris Ranger as well as an all-expense paid trip to Phoenix to compete in the national competition in January during the American Farm Bureau Annual Convention.
He bested three other competitors: Les Jensen of Circle, Charlie Hollenbeck of Molt and Shay Ritcher of Fort Benton during Monday night’s competition. The competitors addressed how Farm Bureau can be a leader in the food labeling debate.
“We need to reach out to the consumer,” noted Gasper, a Circle farmer, during the Discussion. “We want truth in labeling, and we need to stay positive in this discussion. As soon as farmers and ranchers become negative, we hurt ourselves. We need to create a united front as agricultural producers, work with legislators to craft policy and create opportunities to sell our product.”
Gasper was thrilled with winning the competition. “The Discussion Meet gives you the opportunity to learn more about the endless amount of issues facing agriculture,” the young farmer noted. “Plus, it’s not every day you get to win a Polaris. My Ranger is going to work for me on the farm as soon as I get it home.”
