After a slight delay in legislative action due to COVID-19 concerns, the session was back in action and made progress toward the finish line this week. More than half of the bills we tracked this session have come to a conclusion in our farmers’ and ranchers’ favor, with the majority remaining on their very last leg to completion.

More than half of the agriculture-related bills Montana Farm Bureau member policy supported or opposed have either became law or died so far in the session, accordingly. An ever-growing number of other bills we’ve supported are through the second chamber and are headed to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

This week of the session saw progress on some important fiscal bills. House Bill 2: the General Appropriations Act has been passed through both chambers. This is the state’s budget that funds many of the programs and agencies important to us, and the completion of this bill often signals a race to the session’s finish line.
Water users given notice for extended authorization deadline

We continue to monitor the progress of House Bills 14 and House Bill 2, which include funding for major agricultural priorities including the Montana Agricultural Experiment Stations, a new Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and a new Wool Lab for the state. House Bill 14, which covers the long-ranch building bonding program needed for these major building projects, has now passed the House and will be heard in the Senate.
